Roger Banze
Hall of Fame Player Class of 2019
Roger was a powerful right-handed pitcher who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1965 and played five seasons in their farm system. In 1965, Banze and Nolan Ryan were rookies together in the Appalachian League. Ryan pitched for the Marion Mets and Banze pitched for the Salem Rebels in Virginia. The Rebels won the league championship in 1965. In 1966, Banze was a pitcher in the Western Carolinas League (now the South Atlantic League) for the Gastonia Pirates. In a game against the Rock Hill Cardinals on the Fourth of July, Banze set down 23 consecutive batters, starting with the final out of the first inning and ending with the first out of the ninth inning. He pitched in the WCL for the Raleigh Pirates in 1967 and was named to the Western Carolina League All-Star Game. He returned to the Salem Rebels in 1968, which had moved to the Carolina League. Banze wrapped up high minor league career with the Rebels in 1969.
Known for his blazing fastball, Banze starred for Francis Howell High School in the early 1960s, where he hurled two no-hitters. The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted him right out of high school. He also pitched for the St. Charles American Legion Post 312.
From 1982-86Banze coached the Cottleville and Harvester American Legion team, helping C&H win two state championships. He also coached the C&H Travelers in the Metro Collegians League. In 2003, Banze as a member of the first class of inductees into the Francis Howell Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also honored by the St. Charles County Amateur Sports Hall of Fame.
Banze died on May 19, 2012 at the age of 64.
