A 1969 graduate of Riverview Gardens High School, Becher was the head baseball coach at that school from 2000 to 2005.

In 1987, Becher was one of the founding members of the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association (SLABA). He has coached the American National Eagles SLABA team since 2003 and has served as the team’s director since 2007.

William coached the Johnny Mac Thunder from 1979 to 2002, compiling more wins than any other coach in the history of the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association. He won three SLABA Coach of the Year Awards and won the 2013 Muskopf-Sears Award for his service and commitment to SLABA. His teams competed in tournaments against some of the best amateur teams from across the country.

Becher coached over 200 young men who went on to play college baseball. Fourteen of his players advanced to the professional ranks.
