Ross was a star right-handed pitcher for the Scullin Steel team of the Colored lndustrial League from 1937 thru 1939, when he was signed to play professionally for the Mexico City Reds. Davis earned the nickname “Satchel Paige” because he looked and pitched like the lanky mound master. Ross played for the Baltimore Elites, the Cleveland Buckeyes, Boston Blues and the U.S. Army in the Philippines. He was selected to the City All-Star Team four times and Jackie Robinson’s All-Stars with Roy Campanella, Larry Doby, Sam Jethro, Monte Irvin and others. He also pitched in the Black World Series, which was featured in Robert Peterson’s book, “Only The Ball Was White”.
