Richard was an excellent left-handed outfielder for 14 seasons with the Mathews-Dickey Knights. Richard led the league with stolen bases, played center field in two NBC tournaments, serving as a player-manager. He was with the Knights in the Tandy League from 1965-68 and the Heine Meine semi-pro league from 1969-78.

Orms is a member of the Mathews-Dickey Hall of Fame and continues to support that organization. Orms was an outfielder for Sumner and Beaumont High Schools. He has also coached amateur baseball teams in the St. Louis area.
