Malone has been a member of the Greater St. Louis Association of Umpires since 1984. He has worked many high school and college games in the St. Louis area. He has also traveled extensively to umpire games in the Missouri Valley Conference and at the University of Missouri – Columbia.

In 1986, Matt attended the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School in Florida. In 2008, Malone was hired by Major League Baseball as an Observer. He umpired St. Louis Cardinals games and Kansas City Royals games. He worked 15 Major League spring training games in Florida.

Malone was an umpire in the Pioneer League in1986 and in the Midwest League in 1987 and 1988. The next three seasons he worked in the Southern League and was the Umpire Crew Chief in 1990 and 1991. Matt umpired Winter Vall in the Dominican Republic in 1992 and 1993.

He umpired many all-star and playoff games in the Midwest League, Southern League and American Association. Malone also worked numerous fall and winter league assignments. He umpired in the Arizona Fall League when it first started. He’s also assisted at MLB Umpire Camps in the United States, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
