Ken was an outstanding starting pitcher at SIU-Carbondale, who was drafted and signed with the Minnesota Twins in 1982. He played five professional seasons reaching Class AA. Klump pitched for the Wisconsin Rapids in 1982 and 1983, and the Orlando Twins from 1984-86.
Klump switched from playing shortstop to starting pitcher in 1981, when he was a sophomore at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. That year, he pitched a two-hit shutout against nationally ranked Wichita State in the Missouri Valley Conference championship series. In 1982, he led the Salukis pitching staff in complete games and strikeouts.
In 1980, Klump played for the West County Royals in the St. Louis Metro Collegiate League. The following season, he was with the Grand Rapids Sullivans, a Michigan team affiliated with the National Baseball Congress.
He played shortstop at DeSmet High School in the late 1970s, earning All-Metro honors 1979. That same year, he earned All-Metro status as quarterback of the Spartans’ football team.
In 1978 and 1979, he led Thoman-Boothe to back-to-back appearances at the Missouri American Legion state tournament.
Ken worked as a youth instructor at SIU Carbondale. He managed the American Legion 556 baseball team from 2015 until 2018. He coached little league baseball for the Chesterfield Athletic Association from 2006 to 2014.
