Scanio coached baseball at Hazelwood West High School for 28 years from 1984 to 2012. He was the varsity pitching coach from 1984 to 2000 and head freshman baseball coach from 2000 to 2012. He helped develop the pitching skills of Kyle McClelland and David Phelps who both played Major League Baseball.
Scanio is a 1978 graduate of Hazelwood Central High School where he was a standout pitcher on the Hawks’ team all four years he attended. He was named All-Conference in 1978 when he set a school record for ERA, a record which still stands. In 1978, he posted a 9-1 record.
He pitched for Crowder College in 1979 and 1980. During those same two years, Jack was a pitcher and outfielder in the St. Louis Metro Collegiate League.
Scanio was a pitcher and infielder at Missouri Baptist College from 1981 to 1983 and also served as an assistant coach his senior year.
Jack is still active as a player in the St. Louis Men’s Senior Baseball League. He has been a pitcher for the Bud Light team since 2012. During that same period, he was a pitcher and infielder in the Roy Hobbs League, helping the Midwest Pirates win the national title in 2015. He has participated in national tournaments in Phoenix, Arizona and Fort Myers, Florida.
Scanio is still active as a pitching instructor in the St. Louis area, and has conducted summer baseball camps for over 25 years.
