He was a powerful right-handed pitcher and strong left-handed batter. He pitched 21 years for Trenton in the Clinton County League from 1975 to 1995. He was also an outfielder and designated hitter. He later managed the Trenton team for 12 years. Ritzheimer is in the Clinton County Baseball League Hall of Fame.

From 1978 to 1981, Ritzheimer played for Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, setting school records for career batting average and single season batting average. In 2016, he was inducted into the SIUE Hall of Fame.

In 1978, he played in the Jayhawk Summer Collegiate League for the Beatrice Bruins in Beatrice, Nebraska. In 1979, he joined the Edwardsville Civics and his team advanced to the NBC tournament in Wichita, Kansas.

In 1980, he pitched for the Quincy Rivermen in the Central Illinois Collegiate League. 

Ritzheimer managed the Trenton American Legion Post 199 team for eight years. In 1983, his team won the Illinois American Legion state championship.
